Accessorising is always fun when it comes to personalising your style and outfits and knowing that you don’t need expensive diamonds or karat gold pieces to illuminate your personality is even more fun. With costume jewelry you get all the beauty and all the style you can choose from without breaking the bank. As with anything, a little care and attention can go a long way in ensuring longevity and upkeep of your favourite pieces.
When it comes to fashion and costume jewelry, it is important to understand and expect some tarnishing and darkening over time. And here is why. Usually crafted from more common materials, fashion jewelry has the tendency to react to elements such as acid, oils, the skins moisture as well as the air and through such contact, various reactions, discolouring’s or tarnishing may occur. But, you don’t need to get discouraged when you want to add that special piece to your outfit and it looks a little worn out; there are ways to maintain and take care of your costume jewelry and make sure you always have those pieces in tip top shape.
We have researched three ways you can maintain your vintage or costume jewelry by using household products and quick home-remedies. Effortlessly dust off those pieces because these methods are sure to breathe new life into your necklaces, bracelets or rings:
Method 1: Lemon Juice
Acid is a powerful chemical when it comes to cleaning jewelry and when it comes to household products, we head to the pantry or refrigerator for this methods source – lemon juice. Simply grab a bowl big enough for the items you need to clean, then mix one part lemon juice with one part water and create a soaking bath for your pieces. Allow them to soak for approximately 10-15 minutes. Remove from the soak and watch the shine and vibrancy return. You can decide if it needs to soak a little longer. Once you are happy with the result after soaking, simply rinse with a little bit of cold water and dry shine your jewelry with a clean cloth.
Method 2: Baking soda, aluminium foil and salt
With this method, we remain in the pantry when it comes to the ingredients needed. Start with lining a plate or dish of your choice, big enough for your jewelry, with aluminium foil keeping the shiny side facing upwards. Place the costume jewelry onto the dish and foil. Then, mix one tablespoon of salt with one tablespoon of baking soda into one cup of warm water. Mix the ingredients into the water and pour over the jewelry inside the dish. The reaction between the mixture and the foil will clean your jewelry in no time. Remember to rinse with cold water afterwards and dab with a dry cloth.
Method 3: Toothpaste with brush or Q-tip
For this last method, we head over to the bathroom or toiletry cupboard for another convenient cleaning trick using household products. Grab your toothpaste and an old toothbrush. Remember you can use a cotton Q-tip instead of a brush if you don’t have an old one lying around. (This is a good reason to keep that old toothbrush next time and reuse instead of throwing it away). Once you have your pieces and your toothpaste, squeeze a bit of paste on your piece and spread a layer of toothpaste all over your jewelry. Next, use your brush or Q-tip to scrub the jewelry and toothpaste. Once you have brushed, let the toothpaste set for a bit and give it one last light brush off. Watch how easily it removes even the toughest dirt and brings back your jewelry’s shine, and your smile when you get to accessorise again with your favourite piece.
